Product Design – Alison and My Learning Journey

As a 3D artist, I often work at the intersection of creativity and functionality. I wanted to explore Product Design for this reason. I aimed to understand not just how things look. I wanted to know how they work and serve people in the real world.

In 2024, I completed the Product Design Certification from Alison. This course gave me valuable insights into how design, usability, and user experience all come together to create successful products.

About the Certification

The Product Design course from Alison covers:

  • The foundations of human-centered design
  • How to balance aesthetics with functionality
  • Methods for prototyping and testing ideas

My Learning Experience

This course helped me think beyond visuals. I realized product design is about solving real problems. One key lesson was the importance of user research — understanding the needs of people before even sketching the design.

I also enjoyed learning about rapid prototyping, which is very close to how I work in 3D modeling. You can test and refine quickly before finalizing design. This reminded me of my workflow in rendering and animation.

Key Skills I Gained

  • Applying human-centered design principles
  • Creating functional yet aesthetic products
  • Using prototyping methods to refine ideas faster
  • Understanding the full product development cycle
  • Translating product design thinking into 3D visualization & low-poly assets

How I Apply It in My Work

Since completing the course, I’ve applied these principles in:

  • 3D product visualization — showing not just looks but usability
  • Packaging design projects — balancing branding with function
  • Low-poly game assets — ensuring design clarity even with fewer details

Why It Matters

For businesses today, a product isn’t just about looks — it has to solve problems and create positive user experiences. With this certification, I’ve strengthened my ability to think about design strategically, not just aesthetically.

By combining product design knowledge with 3D skills, I can help brands in bringing their ideas to life. This approach ensures a connection with their audience.

Completing the Product Design Certification expanded my perspective as a designer. It reinforced that great design is a mix of beauty, function, and user experience.
